Our mission
Founded in 2020, Equal Legal Aid is a women-led non-profit organisation that aims to defend and promote the fundamental right to asylum in Greece and Europe. Our association is committed to integration through access to rights. Our main objective is to ensure that displaced people, particularly those in precarious and marginalised situations, have access to asylum in an increasingly hostile environment. Our team of European lawyers assists asylum seekers through a programme that combines community outreach activities, individual legal assistance and representation in courts.

By providing legal aid, our project has a twofold objective:
01
Individually, we support asylum seekers throughout this difficult process by providing them with the best possible legal care and the tools to understand and actively participate in the procedure. Ultimately, we want to help break the cycle of dependency.
02
Collectively, we address the root causes of the systemic decline of asylum in Europe by advancing the rights of asylum seekers in the courts through strategic litigation and advocacy at the European level.
The association is characterised by its broad scope of intervention and open-door policy: ELA offers one of the most comprehensive programmes of legal services in northern Greece, enabling it to assist its participants before the asylum authorities at all stages of the procedure. Assistance is providing free of charge to displaced people without regard to gender, age, nationality or religious beliefs. This makes ELA a unique structure in the local non-profit landscape and is its trademark and strategic orientation.
