Joint Letter to the Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum: Regarding the Implementation of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum

ELA has joined 7 organisations in a letter to the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Mr Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, and other key stakeholders, expressing concerns about the implementation of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, adopted in May 2024.

We call for a thorough examination of how these new EU rules, which will come into force in 2026, will affect the Greek asylum system. The letter outlines several legal and practical issues, including

The introduction of free legal advice for asylum seekers.
The broadening of the grounds for rejecting asylum claims, particularly through the expanded concept of ‘safe third country’.
The introduction of fast-track procedures for asylum applications under certain conditions.
Complex rules on suspension of appeals.
Expanded categories for border procedures with reduced guarantees for asylum seekers.
The controversial legal concept of “non-entry” for irregular migrants.
Tighter rules for asylum seekers seeking protection in other EU countries.
The creation of “exceptional” regimes that limit basic protections for refugees.

We call for timely consultations between the relevant authorities and civil society prior to the submission of the Greek implementation plan to the European Commission in December 2024, to ensure compliance with EU and international law.

We request information on the current status of the national implementation plan and advocate for consultations with civil society to discuss the impact of these new regulations.
